It is so difficult to know what is happening when native speakers are pronouncing certain sounds, such as ‘th’ ‘r’ and ‘l’. As an English teacher I try to draw up the position of the tongue, teeth and the rest of the mouth so that my students can see what is happening. Often, however, the meaning doesn’t quite get through.
The Sounds of Speech is a website developed by the University of Iowa in the United States that shows the production of English sounds from every imaginable angle. I have found this to be very useful.
It is available as a phone or tablet app download – and also on their website.
